Fulvic and humic acids are often mentioned in the same breath, and both come from the same organic decomposition process — but treating them as interchangeable misses the point of using either one well.
The size difference
Fulvic acid molecules are substantially smaller and lighter than humic acid molecules, and they remain soluble across virtually the entire pH range. That single physical difference explains most of the practical distinction between the two: fulvic acid moves. It penetrates plant tissue and translocates internally in a way humic acid, built for the soil matrix, does not.
What that means in the field
Humic acid is the right tool for building soil structure and long-term cation exchange capacity. Fulvic acid is the right tool when the goal is fast nutrient delivery into the plant itself — foliar programmes, stress-recovery treatments, and as a carrier that improves the uptake of whatever else is in the tank mix.
